Product Description
Aluminum sulfate (chemical formula: Al2(SO4)3) is a widely used industrial reagent, often confused with alum. Aluminum sulfate is usually used as a flocculant in the purification of drinking water and sewage treatment equipment, as well as in the paper industry. Under natural conditions, aluminum sulfate hardly exists in the form of anhydrous salts. It forms a series of hydrates, of which aluminum sulfate hexahydrate is the most common. Aluminum sulfate is also a very effective mollusk insecticide, killing Spanish slugs
It is not easy to be weathered and lose crystal water. It is relatively stable. It will lose water when heated, and it will be decomposed into oxides of alumina and sulfur at high temperature. When heated to 770°C, it begins to decompose into alumina, sulfur trioxide, and water vapor. Soluble in water, acid and alkali, insoluble in ethanol. The aqueous solution is acidic. After hydrolysis, aluminum hydroxide is formed. The aqueous solution can be boiled for a long time to generate basic aluminum sulfate. The industrial products are gray-white flakes, granules or blocks, light green due to the low iron salt content, and yellowish on the surface due to the oxidation of the low iron salt. The crude product is an off-white fine-grained porous material. Non-toxic, dust can irritate eyes [1].
Basic use
1. It is used as a paper sizing agent in the paper industry to enhance the water resistance and impermeability of paper;
2. After dissolving in water, it can make the fine particles and natural colloidal particles in the water agglomerate into large flocs, which can be removed from the water, so it is used as a coagulant for water supply and wastewater;
3. Used as turbid water purification agent, also used as precipitating agent, color fixing agent, filler, etc. Used as an antiperspirant cosmetic raw material (astringent) in cosmetics;
4. In the fire protection industry, it is used as a foam fire extinguishing agent with baking soda and foaming agent;
5. Analytical reagents, mordants, tanning agents, oil decolorizing agents, wood preservatives;
6. Stabilizers for albumin pasteurization (including liquid or frozen whole eggs, egg whites or egg yolks);
7. It can be used as raw material for the manufacture of artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum and other aluminates;
8. In the fuel industry, it is used as a precipitant in the production of chrome yellow and lake dyes, and it also acts as a color fixing and filler;
chemical properties
It is very soluble in water. Aluminum sulfate is insoluble in pure sulfuric acid (only coexists), and is dissolved in water together with sulfuric acid in sulfuric acid solution. Therefore, the solubility of aluminum sulfate in sulfuric acid is the solubility of aluminum sulfate in water.
